Hello and welcome to my research blog. I’m Ellie and I’m a research student at The University of Queensland in the School of Environment with an interest in biodiversity, conservation and the human relationship (and human impact) on biodiversity. After taking a break from my research – for many reasons including a global COVID-19 pandemic and a strategic choice to earn my teaching credentials with a Master of Teaching in the biological sciences – I’ve returned to finish my thesis!

As part of my research I’ve taken a swing toward social sciences, examining the human psychology of nature connectedness, nature stewardship and environmental responsibility. As a trained wildlife scientist with a background in wildlife and environmental science, this is a new sphere for me and one I’m excited about sharing with you. Of course, my love for biodiversity is not lost and much of my research is intricately linked to the conservation of Australia’s precious biodiversity.

The purpose of this blog is not only to document my journey from higher degree research student to PhD candidate, to my eventual submission (if I ever get there!), but to help me stay on track, focused and organised. I’m not the most dedicated blogger, but I will try to be accountable for updates here and there, if for no one else’s benefit but my own.

If you’re a researcher or anyone involved in biodiversity and conservation, or environmental attitudes, I’d love to hear from you. At this stage I am specifically looking at Australian nature concerns, but international issues are very relevant and I’d love to hear from anyone working in similar spaces.

A little about me? Not that anyone asked. I’m a wildlife scientist, wildlife carer/rehabber and freelance science journalist and wildlife photographer. I also teach high-school science, as well as some english and humanities, including history and geography. My passion is in environmental advocacy and using eco-centric and evidence-based solutions to encourage people to protect the planet. I live in hinterland Queensland on the Northern Gold Coast and together with my fiancé Zac, I run a local grassroots environmental group called Home Habitat.
